Queensland Cup University Students
English Speech
In 1989, Shanghai set up sister-state relationship
with Queensland in Australia. In the recent 20 years, the economic and trade
relations have been expanded continuously, which is specified in educational
area. Aiming to stimulate the friendship and exchange between the two sister
city and state to be deepened and furthered, Queensland Trade and Investment
Office--Shanghai proposed to hold Queensland Cup University English Speech
Competition for Shanghai students in late of 2000. Approved by Shanghai
Municipal Education Commission, based on the friendship between the two
sister city and state, SEAIE and Queensland Trade and Investment Office--Shanghai
co-organized the Queensland Cup University Students English Speech Competition
which introduce the exchange between Shanghai and Queensland. The universities
exchanged with Queensland participate this competition.
Queensland Cup University Students English Speech Competition includes selection procedure, semi-final and final. 28 Students from different universities were recommended for selection procedure. These universities were TongJi University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai Second Medical University, Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, Shanghai Institute of Technology, Shanghai DongHu College of Vocational and Technique, and Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, which all have good education exchange history and current coorperating projects with Queensland. In selection procedure, every student chose one topic provided by the host to make a speech and handed in the speech recording, based on which the judges selected 20 students for semi-final. In semi-final, each student made a topic speech for 3 minutes and answered 1 or 2 questions asked by judges on site. The students were noticed beforehand of the topics, from which each student chose one for speech in semi-final. 10 students were selected for final. The final was hold in Shanghai Hilton Hotel on April 13th. In final, each student chose one topic on site to make extemporaneous speech after three-minute preparation, and answered questions. The questions were asked by the judges. The judges invited are Ms. Penny Richard,Consul General of Australia Consulate General Shanghai; Ms. Nicole Brigg, Manager of International Marketing, Education Qld; Ms. Christine Bundesen, Director of ICTE, UQ; Mr. Jiang Yanqiao, Director of International Cooperation Department of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission; Mr. Ling Lei, Deputy Director of Sister City-State Division, SFAO; Mr. Shi Zhikang, Dean of Foreign Language Institute of Shanghai University of International Studies and Ms. Cui Wen, VJ of IBS. Through marvelous speeches and reasonable judgments, 3 students won the first prize. They are Liu Chengbai from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Cheng Lei from Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade and Gong Zhen from East China Normal University. 3 students won the second prize. They are Zhen Haoru from Shanghai Normal University, Ni Nan from Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade and Li Youyu from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics won the second prize. The winners would get scholarship provided by Australia and a chance to study in Australia for 4 weeks. Other students also got different awards provided by the host. Led by Lin Yuan, Deputy Director of Students Deptartment of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, 6 winners will go to Australia in middle July. Queensland Cup University Students English Speech Competition succeeded in the support of higher authority. The English listening and speaking, the quick thinking and reaction capability of the students and the marvelous speeches gave judges and guests deep impressions. This competition enhanced the cultural education exchange and cooperation between Shanghai and Queensland, which thought by the attending universities and news mediums would help to come into being an active and efficient English academic atmosphere in universities in Shanghai. Some teachers and students suggested the competition enlarge its scope to let more university students take part in.
