SEAIE cooperated with Nacel Culture Association of the United States to develop the cultural exchange item for middle school students and have achieved a great success. The exchange mainly included: Shanghai English Contest for key schools' students, the study in America in summer vacation (4~8 weeks), study in America for a term (10 months) and so on.

The English Contest for key schools' students is aided by COCOCOLA Corp. Its aim is to find out talented students in English in middle school students (especially the high school students), and improve their English level further through the contest and the short-term study for some students in America after the contest. It can also generate a general evaluation on Shanghai's English teaching level and teaching method, and improve the students' abilities in every aspect.

From 1995 to now, the contest's scale has become larger and larger and is known to most middle school students. Now almost every key school in Shanghai will send their representatives to take part in the contest once a year and the students' level is higher and higher. (The Photo)

According to the tradition, the winner of the contest will go to America to study for 4 weeks. During their stay in America, they will study together with the American middle school students, live with them and experience the local conditions, customs and life style. According to the feedback from the students that have been sent out, we did achieve our goal-promote the culture exchange between the students of the two countries and develop the friendship between the two countries' people. As a result, the contest is not only much welcomed by the teachers and students of the middle schools, but receive high opinions from the society as well. (The Photo)

"The Fifth Shanghai English Contest for Key Middle Schools' Students" was held in April, 2001. The organization committee consists of the representatives from the International Exchange Department of Shanghai Education Committee, the Office of Elementary Education, Shanghai Education Association of International Exchange, ? and the Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Teachers University. The secretariat of SEAIE and the Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Teachers University was in charge of the operation of the contest.

The students of senior one and senior two, born in 1982 or 1983, having no experiences abroad, excellent both in moral and studying, in good health, outstanding in English and studying in the key middle schools in Shanghai are all qualified to enter for the contest. After two months' preliminary and intermediary contest, 12 students from 10 schools were selected to enter the final and won automatically the first prize of the contest according to the rule. During the final, the committee invited experts from the Education Committee, universities, middle schools, NACEL Culture Association of the United States and the culture consul of the Consulate General of the United States in Shanghai to constitute the jury. The final contest was in the oral form and contained the items of recitation, speech and answering the question. 50 students won the prize in the contest, with 38 students winning the second prize( from the 13th to the 50th), 9 students winning the first prize(from the 4th to the 12th) and 3 students winning the special prize. The students of the special prize were offered scholarship to study in the United States for a month during the summer vacation.
